Strategic Management: Concepts, 1st Edition, Frank Rothaermel

Combining quality and user-friendliness with rigor and relevance, Frank T. Rothaermel synthesizes theory, empirical research, and practical applications in a breakthrough new text designed to prepare students for the types of challenges they will face as managers in the globalized and turbulent business environment of the 21st century.

This new textbook, written with a single, strong voice, weaves together classic and cutting-edge theory with in-chapter cases and strategy highlights, to teach students how companies gain and sustain competitive advantage. OneBook...OneVoice...OneVision

it could be that I am interested in this topic, but I felt this textbook is almost worthy of omitting the word 'text' (which to many students implies boring as hell). I especially liked the strategy highlights that taught very interesting background stories of the people and companies that are now known around the world today.

Pretty good textbook on strategic management. I agree with most of the book, even though there are some questionable statements in the book too. (If you know the literature, let me provide examples. Corporate effect is not seen as firm effect. The definition of strategy is very unfocused, some kind of quest.) However, there are a large number of good descriptions (e.g. excellent examples of core competencies.

The book has the freshness of a first edition textbook. It will probably get better in the second edition, but after the third edition the textbooks generally starts to suffer in quality due to too many unnecessary revisions.

I applaud that the author has tried not to follow the format of including 101 models just to please all instructors. The book is slightly dumbed-down to fit undergraduates so this book is only really useful as a textbook (e.g. assumes no knowledge of economics). Do not buy the book if you are a practitioner that want a basic understanding of strategic management. You will get a basic understanding but you will also come away bored to death. These textbooks are really only a complement to a good instructor. Not for self study. If anyone wants recommendations I can provide my view.
