The Human Side of Managing Technological Innovation: A Collection of Readings, 2nd Edition, Ralph Katz

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0195135318/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=0195135318&linkCode=as2&tag=freemanagementzon-20

Organizations competing in today's rapidly changing technological markets are faced with the challenges of "dualism"--operating efficiently in the present while innovating effectively for the future. Managers and leaders within these organizations not only have to focus on current market success and profitability, but they must also introduce the next generation of technical advances, product attributes, or service features that will sustain and even augment their continuing global competitiveness.

The Human Side of Managing Technological Innovation, 2/e, provides a variety of approaches and perspectives on issues critical to the effective leadership of technical professionals and cross-functional teams throughout the innovation process. Designed for courses within business, engineering, and executive education programs, the book has been updated throughout and features more than twenty articles new to this edition. In the articles, researchers and practitioners present their thoughts and ideas of the complex interplay between the specialized knowledge and skills of creative professionals and the realistic pressures and constraints required by successful business organizations.

The text is organized into seven sections that cover such topics as motivating professionals, measuring productivity, organizing and leading cross-functional development teams, enhancing creativity and decision-making, developing human resource capabilities, building and maintaining innovative climates, managing lead users for new product innovation, and using technology as a strategic resource. It can be used in advanced undergraduate or graduate courses as well as in organizational workshops and seminars that focus primarily on how managers, individual professionals, project teams, and functional groups deal with problems and issues related to the management of technology-based innovation. The book can also be used as a complementary text for any course that emphasizes product, process, organizational, or technological innovation.

The Human Side of Managing Technological Innovation, 2/e, provides a unique collection of articles that increase the sensitivity and understanding of individuals who are managing or influencing innovation and change processes within organizations. It also offers practicing managers and staff professionals new ideas, tools, and insights for problem-solving, organizing, and functioning more effectively.

About the Author
Ralph Katz is at Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Very good collection of articles and journal papers about Management. Furthermore, the topics discussed pertain directly to Science and Technology Workplaces and organizations that require different management skills than a conventional business with only one discipline. This book is a must for managers that have a mix of employees and personalities, and there are unique methods that percolate time tested ideas with statistical studies and research. To be quite honest, I have not finished reading all of the articles; however, there is an article that may stand out to a relevant dilemma. Recommended.

I bough this book for an Innnovation class I am taking at KU. The book contains a collection of articles that discuss innovation and its management from different angles. I am truly enjoying it.

I took a course with Professor Katz at MIT and this was the textbook. I recommend this series of article for anyone who is leading an organization in technology or science.

Tackling Wicked Government Problems: A Practical Guide for Developing Enterprise Leaders (Innovations in Leadership), 1st Edition, Jackson A. Nickerson

How can government leaders tackle the complex interagency and intergovernmental issues they face increasingly today? Tackling Wicked Government Problems: A Practical Guide for Developing Enterprise Leaders draws on the experience of some of the federal government's most successful executives and leadership development experts who offer proven strategies for successfully taking on the great challenges that confront our nation. Here, they point the way forward for the next generation of senior public officials. Jackson Nickerson, Ronald Sanders, and their colleagues offer several approaches for translating social network theory into practical approaches for building and employing collaborative networks. They present real solutions for developing enterprise leaders and explore how such leaders can use these networks to respond to, and eventually solve, thorny problems that span multiple agencies and disciplines.

Contributors: Admiral Thad Allen, Commandant, U.S. Coast Guard (ret.); David Altman, Center for Creative Leadership —Europe, Middle East, Africa; Donna Chrobot-Mason, University of Cincinnati; Rob Cross, University of Virginia and Network Roundtable; Kristin Cullen, Center for Creative Leadership; Barry Dorn, Harvard School of Public Health and Tufts University School of Medicine; Andrew Hargadon, University of California, Davis; Leonard Marcus, Harvard School of Public Health and Harvard Kennedy School; J. Michael McConnell, Booz Allen Hamilton; Laura Miller Craig, U.S. Government Accountability Office; Jessica Nierenberg, U.S. Government Accountability Office; Salvatore Parise, Babson College; Stephen T. Valente, University of Southern California

Review
"In a world where problems pay no attention to boundaries, and a failure to navigate those boundaries can produce disaster, this book is a welcome guide. It not only charts the big issues we face, but it also lays out a plan for getting the leaders we need. It's an invaluable contribution to the inescapable debate." —Donald F. Kettl, Dean, School of Public Policy, University of Maryland

"Now, more than ever, the country needs effective leaders who can 'move the needle' to improve enterprise performance. Ron Sanders, Jackson Nickerson, and a cast of proven leaders provide practical advice on how to improve leader development in government to tackle tough problems and achieve better enterprise-wide outcomes." —W. Scott Gould, former Deputy Secretary, U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, and coauthor of The People Factor

"Today's big problems cannot be solved by single organizations, no matter how powerful. They demand collaborative effort by people in various federal agencies, and often by others in state, local, and foreign governments and the private and nonprofit sectors. Marshalling these resources is the job of the 'enterprise leader,' a term coined in this volume to describe the qualities increasingly demanded of federal officials. It makes a convincing case both for viewing 'wicked problems' differently and for preparing agency officials to work across boundaries in addressing them." —Timothy B. Clark, Editor-at-Large, Government Executive Media Group

"Government's ability to keep up with an ever-more complicated and changing world depends on a move to a new 'enterprise' model of leadership, and this book is a great starting point for telling us how to get there." —Max Stier, President and CEO, Partnership for Public Service

Theory Building in Applied Disciplines (Publication in the Berrett-Koehler Organizational Performance), 1st Edition, Richard A. Swanson

A Comprehensive Method, Tools, and Techniques for Building Sound Theory

Richard Swanson and Thomas Chermack present a complete five-step approach for developing sound theory in applied disciplines, from conceptualizing a theory to creating relevant assessment criteria, establishing a research agenda to test the theory’s validity, applying the theoretical concepts in the real world, and using that experience to further refine and improve the theory. The method is not restricted to any single discipline, nor is it limited by any research ideology. The authors provide a set of tools for each phase of the process, making this book accessible to a wide audience. And in addition to examples in each chapter, they offer two extended case examples of full theory building.

Review
“Swanson and Chermack argue that applied disciplines falter when either theory or practice dominates. The method of theory building in applied disciplines presented and detailed in this book is simple yet powerful.” —Wayne F. Cascio, Robert H. Reynolds Chair in Global Leadership and Professor of Management, Business School, University of Colorado Denver

“Theory Building in Applied Disciplines is a long-overdue book. Swanson and Chermack have made a truly significant contribution to the development of practice-based theories that will enrich applied disciplines.” —Marshall Scott Poole, Professor of Communication, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

“This book practices what it preaches by meshing theory and practice in an accessible and rigorous way. Scholars and graduate students will benefit from the advice and examples provided.” —Kevin Dooley, Distinguished Professor of Supply Chain Management, Arizona State University

“This is a welcome addition to the growing conversation on the role of theory and theory development in applied disciplines.” —David Whetten, Jack Wheatley Professor of Organizational Studies, Brigham Young University

“Swanson and Chermack’s excellent presentation and expansion of the phases of theory building in applied disciplines represents a significant contribution to the scholarly literature.” —Pedro Reyes, Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, The University of Texas System

Active Shooter Events and Response, 1st Edition, John P. Blair

The Columbine tragedy on April 20, 1999 began a new era in law enforcement as it became apparent that the police response to such mass shootings must be drastically altered. By the time the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting occurred on December 14, 2012, outdated police response strategies had been replaced with new, aggressive tactics used by the first officers on the scene. The frequency with which these events occur remind us time and again about the importance of training and preparing for these critical situations before they occur in our own backyards.

Active Shooter Events and Response is one of the first attempts to not only discuss historic active shooter events, but also to actually dissect some of them—empowering law enforcement professionals by leveraging the essential knowledge and experience of those who have gone before us. The book also offers insight into the training methodologies and strategies used to prepare our nation’s first responders to address the active shooter threat. In addition, the authors discuss the clear and present threat of terrorist organizations using these mass shooter tactics on American soil—similar to the attacks in Beslan, Russia and Mumbai, India.

Written by members of the Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training (ALERRT) Center at Texas State University, this book is the culmination of more than a decade’s worth of training and research into active shooter events and represents state-of-the-art, evidence-based best practices.

About the Author
J. Pete Blair is an associate professor of criminal justice at Texas State University and the director of research for ALERRT. Dr. Blair earned his PhD in criminal justice from Michigan State University and his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in law enforcement and justice administration from Western Illinois University. His current research is focused on active shooter events and best practices. He has published research on a variety of policing issues in numerous journal articles and book chapters.

David Burns has been a deputy sheriff in Texas since 1995 and is one of the founding members of the ALERRT program. He also currently serves as a SWAT team leader, where he has been assigned since 1997. Prior to law enforcement, he served for seven years with the US Army’s 82nd Airborne Division and is a veteran of the Persian Gulf War.

Terry Nichols is the assistant director of the ALERRT Center at Texas State University-San Marcos. He retired from the San Marcos Police Department at the rank of commander in January 2010 after serving over 21 years with the department. His last assignment included commanding the Criminal Investigation Division as well as the Hays County SWAT team, where he served for over ten years. Terry worked numerous assignments for the department over his career, including patrol, narcotics, training, and administration. During his tenure in the Training Division, he led the development and creation of the ALERRT Center in San Marcos. He has a BS degree (1991) and an MS degree (1997) from Southwest Texas State University.

John Curnutt has been a police officer in Texas since 1995 and is the director of training for ALERRT. John has been with the training program since the beginning. He is also a SWAT team leader with over 14 years of experience on the team. John’s past assignments with his agency include working as a School Resource Officer (SRO) in the patrol division. Prior to law enforcement, he studied criminal justice at Texas State University-San Marcos after serving in the US Army’s Arctic Light Infantry immediately after high school.

I have read this book already and it flows really well. The authors did great research into the chapters, including past incidents, tactical considerations and ways to respond as a solo or member of a quickly formed team. I am a student of everything weapon and tactical related because we can never be trained or prepared enough. If you want a great read with fundamentally sound tactics and ideas then get this book and use it. The Authors are well versed in their craft and are not producing a simply thrown together book. There are other books written about this subject but I havent seen one with as much information in one place as this one.

It's no easy task putting together an educational and accurate body of work on a subject as complex and rapidly changing as Active Shooter. This book provides a comprehensive historical look at Active Shooter Events, analysis of the changing threat matrix, and tactical elements surrounding preparation, response, and recovery. The book is well organized, indexed, and full of useful data and statistics. If you have responsibility for developing response policies/procedures, it's worth every penny. Hardback reference books such as this one tend to be a little pricey, so hopefully this will make its way to an eBook in the future at a better price point.

Police Management Examinations: Preparation Guide, 1st Edition, Larry F. Jetmore

Loaded with the priceless insider tips and expert guidance you need to excel on management exams. Dr. Larry Jetmore, one of the nation's leading promotional exam experts, teaches you key management concepts, theories & styles you must know: *specific test prep steps that dramatically increase scores *how to nail the orals while making impressions that prove you're managment material *study strategies for guaranteed retention *plus insight into the challenging Assessment Center segments. Include sample questions, real-world examples and golden advice for avoiding common, devastating mistakes.

The first thing that struck me about this book is the how close the testing process covered resembles my department's testing process.

If you are unfamiliar with the assessment center process and test taking in general, this book would be a real help. The book for Lieutenants, Captains, and Asst. Chiefs would be helpful for someone testing for Sergeant or Corporal as well. It isn't as in depth as some books but it covers the basics extremely well and gives tips that even veterans of the testing process can use.

The book begins with a section on general testing information. The next section covers some basic managment theories. Since these always seem to be on the test, it never hurts to review them. It then goes in depth on written test and oral examniation preparation, and then the assessment center itself. The final parts have a written and oral tests to try at home.

The book is written in a clear and concise manner and can be read in a fairly short amount of time.

For the price I would say that this book is a good value and worth reading.

By far the best study guide I've ever seen. This guide allows the Candidate to apply Policies and procedures specific to his/her own department into the practice exams and questions. I also recommend this for recently promoted Command staff, and patrol officers who are considering testing for promotion. It really helps you see the "Big Picture" within your own Department, and sharpens your thinking. I guarantee you'll get your Money's worth and so much more!

This is a great guide for the police management promotional process. It is very thorough and loaded with great infornation. A word of advice for anyone close to a promotional process for a police management position; Buy this book an buy it early. If you follow the recommendations in the book you will need at least 1 to 2 months to dedicate several hours a day to studying and reading. I, unfortunately, only had a month, but this guide was a great tool and I would highly recommend it.

This book helped me over the years in getting promoted. I recently purchased 2 copies for my Sergeants who were studying for a Lieutenants promotion. They both stated it helped them and one got promoted!

This book was a requirement for a class. It was easy to understand and apply. It comes with key terms in the margins for easy review and description. The chapters begin with a learning objective and concludes with a summary of each objective. Each chapter is filled with detailed information and highlights corporations and how they have applied each concept. I would recommend it for anyone constructing an organization or for those wishing to change management styles. It also, has a CD Rom that is incredible.

This was a excellent supplement to my Taking the lead book. I would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a good book on business management.

Bought this book for class, and unlike with some other books, I didn't need to spend hours online for research in addition to reading the chapters in the book. Made an A in the class!

Experiential Learning: Experience as the Source of Learning and Development, 1st Edition, David A. Kolb

Drawing from the intellectual origins of experiential learning in the works of John Dewey, Kurt Lewin, and Jean Piaget, this comprehensive and systematic book describes the process of experiential learning. The author proposes a model of the underlying structures of the learning process based on research in psychology, philosophy, and physiology, and bases its typology of individual learning styles and corresponding structures of knowledge in different academic disciplines and careers on this structural model. He also applies experiential learning to higher education and lifelong learning, particularly with regard to adult education.

Kolb's "Experiential Learning" is a masterpiece. In it, he deftly synthesizes the strands of learning theory and psychological research that inform his 4 stage learning cycle. All committed "experiential educators" should consult this book in order more deeply to understand the deep and rich conceptual foundation(s) of our potent pedagogical practice. In his "Foreword" to the volume, Leadership guru Warren Bennis positively hyperventilates in applauding Kolb's achievement in this work. And for good reason! From thence comes Kolb's elegant & powerful "Learning Styles Inventory" (or LSI), among other things. Even if you're a cynic or skeptic re: the merit of experiential education, you would do well to peruse this tour-de-force in order better to appreciate what you may be missing.

Not everyone is interested in a referenced text. This is not your sit down and breeze through popular book on a topic. However, if you are interested in understanding the foundation of the field of learning through experience, you absolutely must read, no study, this reference. For those of us who are practitioners, understanding theory is critical and this reference provides the foundation for much of the current work in the learning field. I highly recommend. This book will not go out of date as experiential strategies are not a fade and will not go out of style.

When one encounters the word " dialectic" while reading academic texts it should be as a clear signal as a fire to forest ranger that trouble is on the horizon. This statement may be a bit of an exaggeration but it would definitely be accurate to say that Kolb's Experiential Learning is no easy read. Of course, this does not diminish the value of the book, in spite of difficult passages.

Ironically, this is the essence of the concept of "dialectic". Liberal doses of psychology are ladled throughout the book as the masters (Piaget, Jung, et. al) are consistently consulted to back up theory. Although not professing to have knowledge about psychology, it is clear that their work is essential to establish the interrelationship between cognition and experiential learning. Theory of learning and the opposing learning styles of apprehension and comprehension are explored. This book is clearly the cure for a stubborn case of insomnia.

I can't say that the book is without merit, however, because it held some great information that will be useful now and in future applications when I have the chance to practice my current endeavors. Some passages even caused a sense of anticipation for the succeeding ones because there was a considerable amount of interesting information that I had not yet pondered. I would compare this book to putting molasses on pancakes on a winter day. It is thick and doesn't go down easily but great once you warm up to it.

This book is fantastic. It helps explain in detail the Why, What, How, and What if... If you are a leader and want to communicate better in presentations, negotiations, and team meetings. It is a great book on how people experience the world and internalise it. Another great read that uses examples to explain the theory is 'The Art of Changing the Brain' by J. Zull.

Thinking for a Living: How to Get Better Performances And Results from Knowledge Workers, 1st Edition, Thomas H. Davenport

Knowledge workers create the innovations and strategies that keep their firms competitive and the economy healthy. Yet, companies continue to manage this new breed of employee with techniques designed for the Industrial Age. As this critical sector of the workforce continues to increase in size and importance, that's a mistake that could cost companies their future. Thomas Davenport argues that knowledge workers are vastly different from other types of workers in their motivations, attitudes, and need for autonomy--and, so, they require different management techniques to improve their performance and productivity.

Based on extensive research involving over 100 companies and more than 600 knowledge workers, Thinking for a Living provides rich insights into how knowledge workers think, how they accomplish tasks, and what motivates them to excel. Davenport identifies four major categories of knowledge workers and presents a unique framework for matching specific types of workers with the management strategies that yield the greatest performance.

Written by the field's premier thought leader, Thinking for a Living reveals how to maximize the brain power that fuels organizational success. Thomas Davenport holds the President's Chair in Information Technology and Management at Babson College. He is director of research for Babson Executive Education; an Accenture Fellow; and author, co-author, or editor of nine books, including Working Knowledge: How Organizations Manage What They Know (HBS Press, 1997).

About the Author
Thomas H. Davenport is the President’s Distinguished Chair at Babson College and a research fellow at the MIT Center for Digital Business.

As with many excellent books, I read about this in the Economist. Should be required reading for all managers & personnel people in firms and/or institutions employing 'knowledge workers' (industry, academia, research). Such organizations are filled with incompetent, pig-headed managers (sadly, often themselves knowledge workers who've been put in charge of others, based on their technical achievements, while often having terrible people skills) who often put their companies at risk by demotivating and ultimately losing high-quality technical talent (and the know-how they take with them).

Scientists, engineers, technicians, programmers, analysts (lawyers, doctors...) and all the rest of us 'symbol manipulators' are often not so hard to motivate...that's why we're in our field in the first place - but on the other hand, easily de-motivated by arrogant/ignorant managers who micromanage activities they don't understand, apply pressure in obviously counter-productive ways, or fail to understand the real problems and work being done in their area (usually by failing to ASK, LISTEN, THINK, and COMMUNICATE).

Put another way: how important are proprietary know-how and processes to your organization's competitive edge, or experts in your field, how much does it cost you to find(!) talented/skilled people, and then to train them to the point that they begin to be productive (usually a year or more, perhaps even several), and how useful would their vested knowhow be to your competition? Every company cannot and should not try to emulate the Google shangri-la, but if your organization relies on knowledge workers and there seem to be issues with motivating and retaining them, this book will open your eyes and get you thinking. Also a good book to leave lying on the desk of someone who could make a difference, if they're bright enough to use what's in here.

Pricing and Profitability Management: A Practical Guide for Business Leaders, 1st Edition, Julie Meehan

The practical guide to using pricing and profitability management to build a better business A comprehensive reference for any business professional looking to understand the capabilities and competencies required for effectively managing pricing and profitability, Pricing and Profitability Management explains how to determine the right approach, tools, and techniques for each of six key categories (pricing strategy, price execution, advanced analytics and optimization, organizational alignment and governance, pricing technology and data management, and tax and regulatory effectiveness). Exploring each category in detail, the book addresses how an integrated approach to pricing improvement can give a sustainable, competitive advantage to any organization.

The ultimate "how to" manual for any executive or manager interested in price management, the book presents a holistic, comprehensive framework that shows how integrating these pricing categories into a cohesive program leads to impressive gains that cannot be achieved through a single-pronged approach.

Presents a comprehensive framework for more effectively managing pricing and profitability
Identities the six key categories of pricing and profitability management
Shows you how to gain a competitive edge by managing pricing and profitability

Taking a comprehensive view of pricing, companies can position themselves to tap a vast source of shareholder value—the ability to set and enforce profitable prices, not just once, but again and again in response to marketplace changes and evolving business needs—and this book will show you how.

It is the typical book wrote buy a Consulting firm (Deloitte) to guide you to understand the main elements that you need to consider in your Pricing Project. I won't use it as a reference in Profitability Management, the content is poor.

I've read plenty of "big idea" books on pricing. But this is the first one I can remember that goes a step further and actually shows all the nitty-gritty details of how big (and small) ideas can be put to work. That really makes it stand out from the rest. Buy the other books, read them, and sell them back when you're done. You'll want to keep this one.

So many texts and reads on pricing strategy out there... and they all read like stereo-instructions. Until now! A fantastic, insightful, and thorough review of pricing and how it really is the "bottom-line" for any for profit organization. Well written, detailed, and not too academic. Definitely one I am going to share with my colleagues.

Pricing is like just about any other business practice: Spend enough time in it, and you begin to get tunnel vision. This book can really help you snap out of that mindset and see the big picture. That alone is reason enough to buy it.

The Legal Environment of Business: A Managerial Approach: Theory to Practice, 1st Edition, Sean P. Mellvin

This textbook emphasizes bridging the gap between understanding legal doctrines that impact the business environment and how business owners and managers use legal insight to limit liability and manage risk. Its distinct approach focuses on using teaching features, simulations, case studies, examples, and case law that is accessible and engaging because it is specifically tailored for business students.

I am currently a student online in a Law class and this was the needed book. I was not sure at the time I purchased if I wsa going to keep this book or resale it. I can honestly say that I have enjoyed the book and will keep for future reference. Anyone that is in school, working in business, this is a great tool to have. It is easy to read and understand. This book has made learning business law easy.

Great thank you! Just what I was looking for. Good condition and great price. Very much appreciated. Thank you Loy's

It was a good book, Worked perfect for the class, and i liked the digital format. My only complant is that with the amazon reader you can only see one page at a time. WORK ON THIS AMAZON! It is a text book, not a math or science one, it has heavy reading, and not a single picture i cared about. I for one, would rather use my kindle to read this rather than a monitor. - Kindle fires don't count!

I received the item in time and the book is in great condition. If the opportunity came for me to purchase another book from this source, then I would.
