Management of Organizational Behavior, 10th Edition, Paul Hersey

Ken Blanchard went on to become the management guru of the 90s, writing countless books that can be found right here on Amazon. However, this text book is where is all began. I call it a text book because it is. This text has been used and is still used in management schools around the nation. Written with Hersey and Johnson, this book is the definitive foundation text on how to manage organizational behavior as it pertains to managing people. Following are a couple key points:

1) Diagnosis: It is a manager's job to modify their management style to employee needs. Evaluting employee needs and corresponding management styles can be easily done using Situational Leadership tools (found in book).
2) Intervention: Performance can be managed using the fundamental postive reinforcement psychology. Further, by consciously indentifying needs, performance can be improved more rapidly.
3) Evaluation: If behavioral change does not occur, the individual may not be in the right role.

This sounds dry and obvious by today's standards, but it wasn't when the first edition of this book was published (1980s). Further, most modern organiztional and management theory is based on this book. There is still gold to dig from its pages.

This book would be a timely and great investment to any in a management or leadership role. Awesome, awesome concepts to learn! The book was in very fair condition as I expected and the seller shipped it within a timely manner. I would recommend the seller and this book!

Outstanding book on organizational leadership. Not simply focused on one type of leadership, but drew on several different models. Authors drew parallels and contrasted styles in an excellent manner. THE book on organizational leadership.

Updated information on situational leadership model that is easy to learn and implement to improve one's leadership abilities and improve organizational results. Well written and contains enough examples to assist the reader in grasping the central concepts of the model's execution without belaboring points or creating just another dull text book on leadership techniques. Good addition to the library of anyone interested in increasing their personal leadership capabilities or anyone seriously studying the art of organizational leadership.

Very pleasant reading. The book has everything you need to know about situational leadership and gives you a lot of information on how to influence people to meet objectives. Once you read it you will know how to access the human behavior in different situations and how to take advantage of each of these situations.

Becoming a Master Manager: A Competing Values Approach, 5th Edition, Robert E. Quinn

This fifth edition emphasizes the importance of developing management skills or admitted that learning about management concepts was not the same as learning how to apply those concepts in practice. It is built on a solid foundation of theory and empirical evidence that provides a compelling case for why specific competencies are important.

The framework offers managers an enduring foundation for analysing what types of behaviors are most appropriate to achieve organisational goals in light of the existing environment. This edition overall gives a strong background in management skills and concepts needed on the job.

Easy to read, great to launch your understanding of leadership. I used it for my business management class. Great book, indeed.

Book products are the best because they give you knowledge, so with that said i love this product. Especially the fact that delivery is instant because its a kindle edition. Thank You.

It was a good book, very informative. Explains the history of management methods and elaborates on the modern day methods in becoming a master manager.

This book is less of a how-to management book and more of a get-to-know-yourself book. The exercises were helpful, but only if you devoted yourself to completing them. The only downside was the book offered a number of hypothetical questions to be answered, but provided little to no discussion of possible responses (only a small portion of the book).

As a practicing general manager, I found this book to be one of the most useful I have read on the subject of strategic management. The text is clearly written and illustrated with numerous current examples. Unlike many other books on strategy, this one does an excellent job of integrating internal organizational issues with considerations of market competition. Most importantly for me, perhaps, is that the treatment of how strategy is actually carried out in large organizations rings true, giving me a high level of comfort with the relevance of the material. The book gave me numerous strategic insights and left me with a much improved integrated framework of strategy. I highly recommend it to any general manager wishing to improve his strategic thinking.

I am an MBA student at MIT. We use this textbook in our Strategy course.

My opinion is that this textbook is very valuable. I have ready it very carefully, and it has had a tremendous impact on the way that I approach strategic issues. However, the book is poorly organized and the writing is opaque at times. This means that the benefits of the book become apparent only after careful and repeated readings.

The most important content of the book consists of the frameworks it provides. But these frameworks are not consistently labeled, numbered, or organized -- so the reader has to go to get great effort to pull them out and categorize them. Once found and understood, these frameworks are very valuable. I hope that future editions of the book will do a better job of explicitly enumerating and organizing these frameworks.

In summary, if you are willing to put in the time to carefully read and digest this book, it is highly valuable. But a superficial reading will be of little benefit.

As a final note, this textbook is much enhanced if it is read in conjunction with the many business school cases it references (such as EMI and CT scanners, or Disney and diversified acquisitions). The book itself provides only a few examples.

This is a very accessible introduction to strategic management. The book has very good coverage, is current, and has lots of examples to illustrate the concepts. Easily one of the best management books I have read in a while. It can be approached at multiple levels. You can browse through for the main concepts, but it also has lots to make you really think about if you want. You won't regret buying it!

I not only learned alot from reading this book but actually enjoyed the reading considering it's a text book. As someone who's trying to get back into the fashion industry after a 20 year hiatus; I feel that I have the knowledge I need to head in the direction I want to go now. I really liked how they used real companies for examples and at the end of each chapter they have an explanation of a job in the industry with comments from people in those jobs. There's lots of charts, lists of important contacts, calendars of events, etc that will be important to anyone starting a fashion business or wanting to find a job in fashion. It's worth the money if you can't afford to go to school for this.

It is commonly known that fashion is big business, yet given its global significance, little has been written on the phenomenon of the fashion system. Instead, books have tended to focus on dress history, although recently the discipline has taken a more theoretical turn, with a spate of books appearing that analyze the underlying forces motivating fashion. This pioneering book unites theory and practice to provide an integrated series of snapshots taken from different perspectives of the fashion business in the second half of the twentieth century.

Introduction to Materials Management , 7th Edition, J. R. Tony Arnold

For all courses in Materials Management, Production, Inventory Control, and Logistics taught in business and industrial technology departments of community colleges, four-year colleges, and universities.

Introduction to Materials Management, Seventh Edition covers all the essentials of modern supply chain management, manufacturing planning and control systems, purchasing, and physical distribution. Clearly written and exceptionally user-friendly, its content, examples, questions, and problems lead students step-by-step to mastery. This edition’s extensive updates include: new techniques, technology, and case studies; reorganized and expanded coverage of lean production and JIT manufacturing; new information on sustainability and “green” production; use of INCOTERMS for global supply chains; revised end-of-chapter problems, and more. Widely adopted by colleges and universities worldwide, this is the only APICS-listed reference text for the Basics of Supply Chain Management (BSCM) CPIM certification examination.

Very concise and excellent introduction to anyone working in Materials Management, Supply Chain Management, Operations Management or Plant Floor. This is especially helpful for people working in Information Technology who would like to understand larger scope of business. This book is also a very good study guide for APICS CPIM and CSCP exams.

So far I'm very impressed with this book. Have been meaning to purchase it for a while, but just wasn't sure of the price tag. If I were in University classes I'd have to make the purchase, but I'm studying on my own for the CPIM. That made me a little bit on the side of if I don't have time to read it then it's a big waste of money. So far it's a very informative read. My experience is in logistics and supply chain and have worked in other countries besides the US, so having a plain English book detailing terminology has filled in some blanks.

My only gripe about this book is that it's the Kindle version, yet it doesn't adjust font size like most kindle books. So you are left with pinching or spreading to adjust the size of each page. Other features such as dictionary pop up and highlight, etc all work fine. Just wish that I could adjust the font size so I could read it more easily on my 8" tablet in portrait mode. Using it landscape mode the letters are more easily read, but for me the half page view is just a little annoying. For $90+ this book should have better ability for font adjustments.

From the other reviewer, I haven't come across what they were saying. I flipped through the book a great deal trying to find it but can't seem to. Hopefully it just has to do with the reader you use because so far mine all seem to work fine with Kindle books.

Operations Management, 5th Edition, R. Dan Reid

The 5th edition of Operations Management continues to incorporate more of a business/qualitative focus with less emphasis on a quantitative presentation to OM. This new edition is focused on offering more problem solving hints and tips as part of the solution to most examples and solved problems throughout the book.

New content changes include an increased coverage of sustainability. Each chapter has a new section that features information on how sustainability is impacting the topic of that chapter. There is a new second virtual case on Healthcare and operations management. More coverage of technology and technology examples via operations and supply chain management as well as many new/current examples such as JIT and how the automotive industry/supply chain was disrupted from the Japan earthquake.

Very good book. It gives you real life problems and examples of how to deal with such. Very easy reading and easy to understand the concepts. Some math is involved but for every new problem introduced there is an example of how to do it.

I needed this book for class, it arrived on time an is what i was looking for so its good.

I am a Senior in College and needed this book to complete my studies. It is very easy to understand.

I love this e-text. It works well on my kindle app, and I got it immediately after purchase. Great experience.

I wasn't a big fan of the book format but overall it was decent. I would recommend the book for a casual read but I actually had to read it for a class......major deficit wasn't with the book itself just the way the instructor tried to pull info from the book. Very detailed.

The service for the purchase was decent. Got the book a couple weeks after ordering and was in condition as described. The book itself is useless thought. I don't recommend purchasing it, even if you do need it for a class. Save the money.

The book arrived on time.there were no form of scratches.it looks completely new.the packaging was good.the delivery service was good.there were no torn pages in the book.it is same that i asked for.overall the service was very good.i am very happy with it.

If you know nothing of retail it is great. The problem is that it will be outdated quickly. It uses specific stores as examples and these market is too unstable right now for that.

Introduction to Materials Management, 7th Edition, J. R. Tony Arnold

Absolutly a great tool! As a manufacturing administrator for a big company its a good refresh for my day to day.

Launching New Ventures: An Entrepreneurial Approach, 6th Edition, Kathleen R. Allen

LAUNCHING NEW VENTURES provides tomorrow's entrepreneurs with the tools to launch a successful new business in a global marketplace. The text follows the logical development process, from initial idea through drafting of the actual business plan. The sixth edition represents the most current thoughts, ideas, and practices in the field of entrepreneurship. Allen focuses on the pre-startup and startup stages of a new business, with special emphasis on the process and activities that must take place prior to opening a new business.

The student-friendly material includes real-world case studies, new venture action plans, and advice from successful entrepreneurs and the author herself. Part One introduces the foundations of entrepreneurship and entrepreneurial opportunity that are important to understanding the decisions that entrepreneurs make, the environment in which they make those decisions, and the tasks they must undertake before launching a new company. Part Two addresses the heart of entrepreneurial activity--the testing of a new business concept through feasibility analysis. Part Three focuses on strategy and drafting the business plan. Part Four looks at planning for growth and change in the new organization.

About the Author
Dr. Kathleen R. Allen is the author of more than fifteen books in the field of entrepreneurship and technology commercialization. As a professor of entrepreneurship and the Director of the Marshall Center for Technology Commercialization at the University of Southern California, which she co-founded, Allen works with scientists and engineers to help them identify markets and applications for their technologies and to prepare them to seek funding. Her personal entrepreneurial endeavors include two successful companies in commercial real estate brokerage, development and investment, and two technology-based businesses.

She is also director of a NYSE company. As co-founder and CEO of N2TEC Institute, a nonprofit organization, she is advising universities and state government entities in the northern plains states on the commercialization of energy technologies and medical devices, and assisting them in the development of commercialization teams to drive the launch of new technology ventures. Allen also serves as entrepreneur-in-residence at a major aerospace company working to develop commercial applications for space technology. Allen holds a PhD with a focus in entrepreneurship, an MBA, and an MA in Romance languages; as well as a degree in music.

We all know that the price for texts is over the top. Amazon had the best deal I could chase down at the time and with Prime it shipped fast. Having gotten half way through it the book is actually interesting. Not something that will make it to my refrence shelf. It is definitly not the worst textbook drivel that often abounds in Entreprenurship titles. It gets four stars for being obnoxiously priced otherwise a quality text.

You cannot access the book on the web reading apps and Windows 8 app Metro version. The PC desktop kindle app running on the new Windows 8.1 crushes making it hard to read. Works great on the kindle fire.

Professor Koch's book is excellent. I highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in banking. The book is great to read if you don't know much about the industry or if you are an expert. I studied with Professor Koch at USC at the undergrad level and decided to go into banking thanks to his class and book. The book covers liquidity management, credit management, capital management, asset and liability management (focus on interest rate risk management), balance sheet analysis and other interestig topics. I've worked in several areas of commercial banks in Ecuador, namely credit, treasury, asset and liability management and finance. The book has always come in handy. I've also used it to teach at the University level down here. It is especially interesting how every chapter is related in some way to the ALCO (Asset and Liability Management Commitee).

The cases are also very interesting. In Ecuador we recently had a liquidity crunch in the banking system. I was very much surprised to find an anylisis of a case very similar to what was happening down here in the book. The case was on the Contintental Illinois bank failure. In other words, I think this book is a must for anyone interested in the industry.

Managing to Learn: Using the A3 Management Process to Solve Problems, Gain Agreement, Mentor and Lead, 1st Edition, John Shook

Managing to Learn by Toyota veteran John Shook, reveals the thinking underlying the vital A3 management process at the heart of lean management and lean leadership. Constructed as a dialogue between a manager and his boss, the book explains how A3 thinking helps managers and executives identify, frame, and then act on problems and challenges.

Shook calls this approach, which is captured in the simple structure of an A3 report, the key to Toyota's entire system of developing talent and continually deepening its knowledge and capabilities. The A3 Report is a Toyota-pioneered practice of getting the problem, the analysis, the corrective actions, and the action plan down on a single sheet of large (A3) paper, often with the use of graphics. A3 paper is the international term for a large sheet of paper, roughly equivalent to the 11-by-17-inch U.S. sheet.

The widespread adoption of the A3 process standardizes a methodology for innovating, planning, problem-solving, and building foundational structures for sharing a broader and deeper form of thinking that produces organizational learning deeply rooted in the work itself, says Shook. Management expert James Womack predicts Managing to Learn will have a deep impact on the way lean companies manage people. He believes readers will learn an underlying way of thinking that reframes all activities as learning activities at every level of the organization, whether it's standardized work and kaizen at the individual level, system kaizen at the managerial level, or fundamental strategic decisions at the corporate level.

A unique layout puts the thoughts of a lean manager struggling to apply the A3 process to a key project on one side of the page and the probing questions of the boss who is coaching him through the process on the other side. As a result, readers learn how to write a powerful A3 - while learning why the technique is at the core of lean management and lean leadership.

In a readable and accessible style, John Shook provides an excellent introduction to the "A3" plan for problem solving. It is the most accessible and understandable beginners level book I have seen on the subject.

Pascal Dennis' "Getting the Right Things Done" also covers the A3 process - though for strategy deployment. Personally I find John Shook's "Managing to Learn" more readable and a better introduction to the A3, though they do cover different ground and the one doesn't replace the other.

If you want to know more about the A3 planning and problem solving process - that ties everything in lean together - this is a great place to start.

Managerial Economics: Foundations of Business Analysis and Strategy (The Mcgraw-Hill Economics Series), 11th Edition, Christopher Thomas

The goal of Thomas and Maurice’s Managerial Economics is to teach students the economic way of thinking about business decision and strategy. This edition continues to develop critical thinking skills and provides students with a logical way of analyzing both the routine decisions of managing the daily operations of a business as well as the longer-run strategic plans that seek to manipulate the actions and reactions of rival firms.

Managerial Economics is a self-contained textbook that requires no previous training in economics. While maintaining a rigorous style, this book is designed to be one of the most accessible books in managerial economics from which to teach and learn because of its clarity of presentation and strong end of chapter problems. Rather than parading students quickly through every interesting or new topic in microeconomics and industrial organization, this 11th edition instead carefully develops and applies the most useful concepts for business decision making and strategic planning.

There's another version with the same content but different cover. And that one is much cheaper. I feel regret to rent this one. But there's nothing bad with this book.

I loved how the authors conveyed the concepts to the reader in a style and manner that was very easy to understand for the reader. Although the book does not dive deep into either field of macroeconomics or microeconomics in depth, it covers all of the relevant topics of economics a manager may face in the future. This book so far has been the most well-written book I have rented for my MBA curriculum of all the books in all the courses I have taken up until now.
